Korsakoff syndrome (KS) refers to a chronic neurologic condition that usually occurs as a consequence of WE. In 1881, Carl Wernicke described an acute encephalopathy characterized by mental confusion, ophthalmoplegia, and gait ataxia and associated it with autopsy findings of punctate hemorrhages around the third and fourth ventricles and the aqueduct.

The main alcohol dementia symptoms include memory loss. The Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome are two separate but related stages of the Elliott L. Mancall, in Neurology and General Medicine (Fourth Edition), 2008 Korsakoff's Syndrome. Korsakoff's syndrome, or psychosis, the chronic form of the Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome, is characterized primarily by an amnestic dementia, that is, a profound disorder of memory with relative preservation of cognitive abilities per se. Alcohol is linked to the development of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a brain disorder resulting from thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is actually a two-stage brain disorder in which Karsakoff syndrome (also known as Korsakoff psychosis) develops due to permanent brain damage as symptoms of Wernicke encephalopathy wane. Korsakoff syndrome (KS) is an amnestic disorder caused by thiamine (vitamin B 1) deficiency typically associated with prolonged use of alcohol.

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a neurodegenerative disorder that is caused by a severe thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Parts of the brain may be damaged as a result of this deficiency, causing increased difficulty with memory, movement, vision and coordination.
The Korsakoff syndrome is defined as a disproportionate impairment in memory, relative to other aspects of cognitive function, resulting from a nutritional (thiamine) depletion. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a common complication of a thiamine deficiency that is primarily seen with alcoholics. This syndrome was classically described as a clinical triad consisting of altered mental status (i.e., confusion or dementia), nystagmus (or ophthalmoplegia), and ataxia. Korsakoff syndrome (chronic, irreversible) Korsakoff syndrome is a late development in patients with persistent vitamin B1 deficiency. It is most often seen in thiamine deficiency due to chronic heavy alcohol use.
For this reason, Korsakoff’s syndrome is also widely regarded as being a form of alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD). Korsakoff syndrome affects the ability to learn new information, remember recent events and causes long-term memory gaps. Memory challenges can be the most prominent symptom, while other thinking and social skills might remain relatively unaffected.

Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome is a condition that is similar to dementia and is caused by drinking too much alcohol. Very rarely, Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome can be caused by factors other than alcohol. The majority of cases are caused by alcohol, and alcohol-related ‘dementia’ is the focus of this information. In Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome the

Emsley R (1), Smith R, Roberts M, Kapnias S, Pieters H, Maritz S. Findings on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain were consistent with previously undiagnosed Korsakoff syndrome.

It is most common in patients with severe alcohol‐use disorders and develops after self‐neglect and malnutrition. This is known as ‘Wernicke’s encephalopathy’. If this condition isn’t treated quickly, the person may develop a more long-term condition called ‘Korsakoff’s syndrome’. This has many of the same symptoms of dementia. About a quarter of the people affected by Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome who get treatment make a good recovery.
