The ATEX 137 workplace directive 99/92/EC (Minimum requirements for improving the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres) is dedicated to End Users and Employers and states that they must classify areas where hazardous explosive atmospheres may occur into zones based on the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere occurring and its persistence. The two directives are also known as ATEX 100a and ATEX 137 because they refer to earlier paragraphs (§100a and §137) developed by the EC. The 94/9/EC, “Equipment directive”, does not only apply to electrical equipment but also ALL mechanical equipment.
